Disease Description:
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. The condition can be self-limiting or can progress to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer. Hepatitis viruses are the most common cause of hepatitis in the world but other infections, toxic substances (e.g. alcohol, certain drugs), and autoimmune diseases can also cause hepatitis.
Type Of Hepatitis:
There are 5 main hepatitis viruses, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E. In particular, types B and C lead to chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and, together, are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer.
Cause Of Hepatitis:
Hepatitis A and E are typically caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B, C and D usually occur as a result of parenteral contact with infected body fluids. Common modes of transmission for these viruses include receipt of contaminated blood or blood products, invasive medical procedures using contaminated equipment and for hepatitis B transmission from mother to baby at birth, from family member to child, and also by sexual contact.
Signs & Symptoms:
Most common Signs & Symptoms for Hepatitis are:
•    Loss of appetite
•    Fatigue
•    Mild fever
•    Muscle or joint aches
•    Nausea and vomiting
•    Pain in your belly
•    Dark urine
•    Light-colored stools
•    Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)
•    Itchy feeling
•    Mental changes, such as stupor (being in a daze) or coma
•    Bleeding inside your body

Treatment Options:
Bed rest, abstaining from alcohol, and taking medication to help relieve symptoms. Most people who have hepatitis A and E get well on their own after a few weeks.
Hepatitis B is treated with drugs, such as lamivudine and adefovir dipivoxil. Hepatitis C is treated with a combination of peginterferon and ribovarin.
Liver transplant of hepatitis B or C, or D-caused liver failure.
Medicine:
Antiviral: Emtricitabine (Emtriva), Tenofovir (Viread), Entecavir (Baraclude)
Other treatments: Interferon alfa-2b by injection

Procedure occasionally suggested:  Liver transplant.
